Paul Charlton was the world’s number one full-back in his hey-day. In addition he was brave, dynamic, inspirational and dedicated. Paul Charlton was one of the greatest Rugby League players to have been produced by Cumbria. The game has never seen a full-back who scored tries in such a torrent. No full-back has come anywhere near matching his tally of 223 tries. Nor is anyone likely to equal his record of 33 tries in a season.
He was a major part of all all-star Salford team and captain of Workington Town’s 1977 Lancashire Cup-winning side. Furthermore, he won 19 Great Britain caps and was an outstanding performer in the British Lions squad which toured Australia and New Zealand in 1974.
