1995 FIVE NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP – CLASSIC GAMES CELEBRATED

The 1995 Five Nations. Watch the story of the 1995 team. And England’s heroic team led by Will Carling were the inspiration behind one of our latest Polo styles. Take a look.

1995 Five Nations Championship Decider

In 1990, Scotland famously defeated England at Murrayfield in Edinburgh to secure the Five Nations Tournament.

In the Championship decider and the battle for the Calcutta Cup. Scotland’s 1990 triumph will always stand out on a day where both teams went into the match dreaming of the Grand Slam. Tony Stanger planted the ball down for perhaps the most famous try in Scotland’s history.

England Rugby 1995 Experienced Team

The England team of 1995 had the opportunity to revenge for the defeat. Jerry Guscott, Rory Underwood, Rob Andrew, Brian Moore, and skipper Will Carling all remained from 1990.
Rugby matches can provide fast-flowing open rugby, but this match was all about winning. The England Rugby quintet had the scares and the experience from 1990 and carefully set about nullifying the Scottish visitors.

England Rugby Five Nations Forward Pack

England fielded a monster pack. Jason Leonard, Brian Moore, and Victor Ubogu in the front row. Martin Johnson and Martin Bayfield at Lock. And a back row of Tim Rodber, Ben Clarke, and Dean Richards.

England v Scotland Championship Decider First Half

The atmosphere was tense. And on the pitch too players were feeling the pressure. Peter Wright was yellow-carded for rucking Will Carling out of the way. The first time a Scot had been sin-binned. But, it was Craig Chalmers who opened the scoring for Scotland. With a drop goal. The Melrose stand-off added another after half an hour. But, it was his opposite number Rob Andrew who kicked four penalties to make the score 12 points to 8 at half-time.

Second Half 1995 5 Nations Final Weekend

Rob Andrew continued in the second half as he had in the first period. He added a further penalty. But then Gavin Hastings kept his team in touch with his own third penalty. It was 18-12 going into the final quarter. But then Andrew dropped a goal to put his team more than a full score ahead. In such a closely fought contest, that nine-point lead had a decisive feel to it. And just to make sure Andrew added another penalty deep into stoppage time.

England Rugby Team Game Plan

England were really well structured. Their game plan of limited Scotland’s attack and creating pressure up front worked perfectly. The pack hammered the lighter Scots and the trusty boot of Rob Andrew ensured no repeat of 1990. And more importantly Triple Crown winners. Calcutta Cup winners and 1995 Five Nations Championship winners.
