WALES’S GREATEST RUGBY PLAYERS – CLIFF MORGAN
Cliff Morgan, a name synonymous with Wales Rugby, was born in Trebanog, Rhondda Valley, and rose to prominence as one of the greatest rugby players Wales has ever produced. Known for his exceptional skills at fly-half, Morgan made his debut for Cardiff Rugby Club straight out of Tonyrefail Grammar School in 1949. His natural balance, speed, and impressive line-kicking abilities quickly earned him a reputation in Welsh rugby. As a result, he was selected to represent the national team, gaining his first cap for Wales in 1951 against Ireland.
Morgan’s Contribution to Wales Rugby
Throughout his career, Cliff Morgan earned 29 caps for Wales, playing between 1951 and 1958. One of his most notable achievements was being part of the Grand Slam-winning Wales Rugby team in 1952. Moreover, in 1953, Morgan was instrumental in leading Wales to an unforgettable victory against the touring All Blacks, cementing his status as a national hero. Furthermore, his inspiring performances for Cardiff Rugby Club and Wales Rugby solidified his place as a legend in the sport.
The 1955 British and Irish Lions Tour
In addition to his achievements with Wales Rugby, Cliff Morgan’s role in the 1955 British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa was equally significant. Morgan played a key role in a drawn Test series, 2-2, against the formidable Springboks. Consequently, Morgan’s leadership and tactical genius were displayed when he captained the Lions in the third Test after Robin Thompson’s injury, leading them to a crucial 9-6 win. His try in the first Test, played in front of 100,000 spectators at Ellis Park, remains one of the most thrilling moments in rugby history. As a result of his outstanding performances, Morgan earned the nickname “Morgan the Magnificent” from the South African press.
