David Bishop Wales Rugby
CHILL-OUT SUNDAY THE ELLIS RUGBY – THE BISH: IT’S ALL ABOUT ME – BOOK PREVIEW
The Bish: It’s All About Me is the unfiltered life story of David Bishop Wales Rugby legend. Moreover, it is a brutally honest account of a man whose career was filled with brilliance, controversy, and raw emotion.
The Genius of David Bishop
David Bishop was one of the most gifted rugby players of his generation. Furthermore, his rise to fame at Pontypool RFC showed a rare blend of skill, speed, and tactical intelligence. In addition to his on-field genius, Bishop’s fiery personality and competitive edge made him unforgettable. Subsequently, his early career in rugby union promised great things for Wales Rugby, but his path would not be straightforward.
Triumph and Turmoil
Bishop was expected to become Wales’ permanent scrum-half after Terry Holmes switched codes in 1985. However, a controversial on-field incident against Newbridge led to a suspended jail sentence and an eleven-month ban. Consequently, the Welsh selectors turned to Robert Jones instead. Therefore, Bishop’s Wales Rugby dreams in union were effectively ended.
Despite this setback, Bishop continued to shine at Pontypool. Furthermore, the 1987–1988 season was the most successful in the club’s history, losing only two games. His famous penalty in the mud to beat Swansea, followed by his cheeky celebration aimed at the Welsh selectors, became part of rugby folklore.
Switching to Rugby League
In 1988, Bishop signed for Hull Kingston Rovers, beginning his David Bishop Wales Rugby league chapter. Additionally, he enjoyed two strong seasons before being selected for the 1990 Great Britain Lions tour. As a result of a later coaching fallout, Bishop moved to London Crusaders. He went on to win four caps for the Wales rugby league team in 1991 and 1992, cementing his place in dual-code history.
A Story of Passion and Redemption
Bishop’s autobiography reveals the highs of international rugby and the lows of personal struggles. Moreover, it tackles violence, drug use, and depression with unflinching honesty. It is a must-read for fans of both union and league.
