A FREE STATE RUGBY LEGEND – DE WET RAS

De Wet Ras Rugby is a name etched in the history of South African rugby. Born on January 28, 1954, in Harrismith, Free State, he rose from schoolboy rugby to the heights of international competition. His journey through the ranks showcases dedication, skill, and leadership.

Early Rugby Career and Development

Ras began making waves at a young age. He represented Eastern Free State Schools at the prestigious Craven Week tournament for three years from 1970 to 1972. Moreover, this early exposure helped shape his understanding of the game.

Following school, Ras completed his National Service in Pretoria. During this time, he represented Northern Transvaal’s under-20 side, gaining valuable experience. In 1974, he enrolled at the University of the Free State and made his senior debut for Free State.

Provincial Glory with Free State

De Wet Ras Rugby achievements at the provincial level are remarkable. He played 141 first-class matches for Free State, setting multiple records. Furthermore, he was instrumental in shaping the team’s attacking game with his sharp tactical kicking and intelligent playmaking.

One of the standout moments of Ras’s career came in the 1976 Currie Cup final. Free State faced off against the formidable Western Province. In a tightly contested match, De Wet Ras played a pivotal role. He orchestrated key plays and added crucial points with the boot. Consequently, Free State clinched a historic victory. This triumph remains one of the most celebrated moments in Free State rugby history.

Springbok Call-Up and International Experience

Ras earned two test caps for South Africa. His first came in 1976, when he replaced Gerald Bosch in a test against New Zealand at Kings Park, Durban. In 1980, he made another appearance against the South American Jaguars. Additionally, he was part of the Springbok tour to South America, where he scored 69 points in just three tour matches. As a result, he left a lasting impression despite limited test opportunities.
