CANADA’S GREATEST RUGBY PLAYERS – GARETH REECE
Gareth Rees stands as one of the most prominent figures in Canada Rugby history. Born on June 30, 1967, in Duncan, British Columbia, Rees grew up with a deep connection to rugby through his father, Alan Rees. Moreover, Gareth Rees’ education at St. Michaels University School and Harrow School in England played a key role in his rugby journey.
Early Club Career and International Success
Rees began his club career with Castaways in Canada before moving to England. Subsequently, he made significant strides in his career by playing for prominent English clubs such as Wasps and Harlequins. In 1986, he was selected to play for Wasps in the prestigious John Player Cup final. This opportunity set the tone for a stellar career in club rugby.
International Achievements with Canada
Gareth Rees earned 55 caps for Canada, leading the team as captain in 23 of those matches. Furthermore, he showcased exceptional talent as a fly-half and full-back, amassing a remarkable 487 points in international test matches. Rees’ leadership was instrumental in Canada’s impressive performances in four consecutive Rugby World Cups from 1987 to 1999. As a result, Rees remains the only player to have participated in all of the first four Rugby World Cups.
The Battle of Boet Erasmus
One of the most memorable moments in Rees’ career occurred during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. In a heated match against South Africa, known as the Battle of Boet Erasmus, Rees stood up for his teammates in a physical altercation. Consequently, he received a 30-day suspension. However, this incident only solidified his commitment to his team.
Honours and Legacy
Gareth Rees’ career achievements earned him induction into multiple Halls of Fame. In 2011, he became the first Canadian to be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Additionally, in 2014, he was inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame, marking a historic moment for Canadian rugby. His contributions extended beyond the field, with one of his bronzed rugby boots being turned into a prestigious trophy.
