A NATAL RUGBY LEGEND – GARY TEICHMANN
Gary Teichmann, born on January 9, 1967, was a standout rugby player for both Natal Rugby and the South African national team, the Springboks. His journey began at the University of Natal, where his talent quickly caught the attention of the Natal Currie Cup team.
In 1991, Teichmann made his debut for Natal Rugby. His leadership skills became evident, and he was soon entrusted with the captaincy by coach Ian McIntosh.
Success with Natal Rugby
Teichmann played a pivotal role in Natal Rugby’s success. He led the team to Currie Cup victories in 1992, 1995, and 1996. Moreover, his captaincy in 1995 and 1996 cemented his reputation as a leader.
Additionally, Natal finished as runners-up in 1993 and 1999 under his leadership. The team also reached the final of the Super 10 competition in 1994. Furthermore, when the Super 12 competition was introduced in 1996, Natal Rugby became the Sharks, with Teichmann as captain. Consequently, he led the Sharks to the Super 12 final in 1998.
Throughout his career, Teichmann represented Natal Rugby and the Sharks in 144 matches, making a lasting impact on South African rugby.
Springbok Captaincy and International Success
Gary Teichmann’s international career took off in 1993 when he was selected for the Springbok tour to Argentina. Subsequently, he joined the 1994 squad that toured Wales and Scotland.
On September 2, 1995, Teichmann played his first full international Test for South Africa against Wales, marking the occasion with a try in a 40–11 victory at Ellis Park.
After just six Test matches, Teichmann was named Springbok captain in 1996. Consequently, he became one of the most successful South African captains in history. Under his leadership, the Springboks won 27 out of 36 Test matches, achieving an impressive 72% win rate.
Record-Breaking Winning Streak
Between 1997 and 1998, Teichmann led South Africa on a remarkable 17-match unbeaten streak. Furthermore, this period saw the Springboks dominate world rugby.
As a result, South Africa won the 1998 Tri Nations Series undefeated. They achieved victories over both Australia and New Zealand, with a standout 61–22 win over Australia at Loftus Versfeld.
Unfortunately, his tenure as captain ended in 1999 before the Rugby World Cup, a decision that remains a topic of debate among rugby enthusiasts.
