SOUTH AFRICA’S GREATEST RUGBY PLAYERS – HENNIE MULLER

Hennie Muller, born on 26 March 1922 in Witbank, is celebrated as one of the greatest Springbok rugby players. His international career began on 16 July 1949 when he debuted against the touring All Blacks. Muller played as number eight and immediately made an impact. The Springboks secured a 15-11 victory in Newlands, setting the tone for a successful series. Moreover, the team continued their winning streak, achieving a clean sweep against the All Blacks.

Springbok Rugby – Triumph in Europe

In 1951, Hennie Muller captained the Springboks during their European tour. The team achieved a resounding 44-0 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield, with Muller scoring a try. Furthermore, they continued their dominance by defeating Ireland, Wales, and England, securing the Grand Slam. Muller’s leadership and scoring prowess were pivotal. Consequently, South Africa completed their tour with a remarkable win over France in Paris, where Muller scored one of the six tries.

Muller continued his captaincy in the 1953 series against the Wallabies. In the first test at Ellis Park, he led the team to a convincing 25-3 win, scoring a try. Although the Wallabies won the second test in Cape Town, the Springboks rebounded in Durban with an 18-8 victory. Subsequently, Muller played his final test match in Port Elizabeth, leading the Springboks to a 22-9 win. Therefore, his tenure as a player ended on a high note, having solidified his legacy.

Hennie Muller’s influence on rugby extended beyond his playing career. He coached the Springboks in 1965 and was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2001.
