Early Beginnings

the Rugby School rules. Eleven Welsh Rugby Clubs met in March 1881, the meeting resulted in the formation of the Welsh Rugby Union.

Wales soon faced their first international Rugby match against England. Wales faced a huge challenge with England having played 17 tests previously and only ever losing 2. The game was to be a humiliating defeat for Wales with the final score reading 82 – 0 in modern day scoring.

Welsh Success

In 1890, on their seventh attempt, Wales defeated England 1 – 0. This game paved the way for Welsh success. 1893 marked the first time Wales won the Home Nations Championship. In addition the side also won the ‘Triple Crown’. This means that Wales was victorious in matches against all 3 of the other home nations during the competition.

Wales faced their first international side that wasn’t from the home nations in 1905. Wales hosted New Zealand on 16 December, the game ended 3 – 0 to Wales. The success of the game against New Zealand resulted in a match against the Springboks in 1906. A crowd of more than 40,000 were present at the game which finished in a 11 – 0 victory for South Africa.

In 1908 Wales won the Home Nations Championship and the Triple Crown. In addition Wales was the first country to win the Grand Slam in the first year of it being contested. This feat was matched by Wales again in the next years championship. They went on an unbeaten run of 11 games between March 1907 and January 1910.

Testing Times

Welsh Rugby struggled throughout the 1920’s and 30’s with only a handful of championship victories. However Wales were able to defeat England at Twickenham in 1933 after 23 years of trying.

International Rugby didn’t take place during the Second World War and only 4 previous Welsh internationals were still able to play when international games resumed. The first Welsh Rugby international game to take place after the war was against England in 1947, a game Wales lost 6 – 9. The first win in the Five Nations Championship after WWII for Wales came in 1950. The side also won the Grand Slam and Triple Crown.

There was big changes in the Welsh Rugby Union with a Coaching Committee set up in the 1950’s to improve coaching quality.

Return to Success

The work to improve the coaching quality in Wales paid off with the 70’s featuring what is dubbed as the greatest side to ever wear the Welsh Jersey. The team won 5 Five Nations Championships, drawing a further 2, 3 Grand Slams and 5 Triple Crowns.

In addition the British Lions side that embarked on a tour of New Zealand in 1971 featured 11 Welsh players. The 1971 tour is the only time that the British Lions have beaten New Zealand in a test series.

The 1987 Rugby World Cup saw Wales top their group after beating all 3 of the other teams in their group. The next round, the quarter finals, saw Wales face England. Wales were seen as the underdogs for the match, however Wales emerged victorious after beating England 16 – 3; allowing them to progress to the semi-finals. Facing New Zealand in the semi-final was not expected to be an easy game for Wales. A point that was proven with New Zealand looking unstoppable in the match with Wales suffering a 49 – 6 defeat. Wales didn’t leave empty handed though. They beat Australia 22 -21 to finish third. In addition Welsh player Huw Richards was the first player to be sent off in a Rugby World Cup.

The 1990’s

Wales hoped for a better finish in the 1991 Rugby World Cup after their third place finish in the previous tournament. The first game for Wales saw them face new comer Western Samoa. What should of been an easy game for Wales turned into a disaster with Western Samoa winning 16 – 13. Wales needed to win their reaming 2 group stage games to progress to the quarter finals. However to do that they had to beat tournament favorites Australia. Wales won their next group game against Argentina 16 -7. Australia won the game against Wales 38 – 3. Leaving Wales out of the tournament and requiring to qualify for the 1995 event.

Qualifying for the 1995 Rugby World Cup required Wales to play Portugal and Spain and then Romania and Italy. The Welsh team won all of their games providing them with a place in the World Cup. After winning the 1994 Home Nations Championship Wales were hoping for a more successful showing in the World Cup. However this World cup ended in the same way the previous one had. Loses to New Zealand and Ireland sent Wales out of the group stages for the second consecutive tournament.

Wales hosted the 1999 Rugby World Cup. They topped their group having won 2 and lost 1. However the quarter finals was as far as Wales could go after losing to Australia 24 – 9.

The 2000’s

Wales struggled in the early 2000’s. Little was expected from Wales in the 2003 Rugby World Cup because of this. After winning their opening pool match against Canada the morale in the Welsh squad was high. Wales also won their second match against Tonga despite the game being plagued by sloppy playing from Wales. The third match to take place was against Italy, Wales won once again securing them a place in the quarter finals with one pool game still to play. Despite losing to New Zealand in the final pool match Wales showed their strength. They had brought a 28 – 10 deficit back to 33 – 37 by the second half. Wales however struggled to score in the second half leading to a 53 – 37 victory for New Zealand.

Wales faced England in the quarter finals. The Welsh side capitalised on a shaky England in the first half leading to a 10 – 3 lead for Wales. England fought back in the second half with the game ending in a 28 -17 defeat for Wales.

Wales won their first 6 Nations Championship in 2005, as well as winning the Grand Slam and Triple Crown. Wales were the first team to win a Grand Slam while playing more games away than at home.

The 2007 Rugby World Cup saw Wales defeat Canada in the opening pool match before losing to Australia in the second. After winning the third pool match against Japan it was essential Wales beat Fiji in the final game to progress to the quarter finals. Wales were behind at the end of the first half against Fiji. The second half saw the lead constantly change between the two sides until Fiji finally emerged victorious with a 38 – 34 win.

The 2010’s

In the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Wales lost their opening pool match 17 0 16 to South Africa. But Wales came back in the rest of their pool matches, winning all 3 of them. This positioned Wales second in their pool and into the quarter finals. Wales won their quarter final 22 – 10 against fellow home nation Ireland. This was the first time since the 1987 Rugby World Cup that Wales had progressed beyond the quarter finals. France was the opposition Wales’ semi-final, the final score of 9 – 8 in the favour of France ended Wales’ World Cup dream. However all was not lost as Wales could still match their best Rugby World Cup finish of third.

The teams battling for the top three positions were the same as it had been in the 1987 Rugby World Cup. France and New Zealand were meeting in the final while Australia and Wales were battling for third position. The game against Australia ended 21 – 18 to Australia while New Zealand beat France to win the Rugby World Cup.

The 2015 Rugby World Cup featured Wales in the same pool as England. Wales got off to a flying start, winning their first pool match against Uruguay 54 – 9. They then went on to beat England 28 – 25 at Twickenham. The Wales winning run continued with a 23 – 13 victory over Fiji. Australia proved to be a tough team to beat with Wales’ final pool match ending in 15 – 6 Australian defeat. Nevertheless Wales finished second in the pool and faced South Africa in the quarter finals. The quarter final ended in a 23 – 19 score line and South Africa victory.

The Wales Rugby Shirt

The Wales Rugby Shirt is traditionally red with a white collar, although this design has featured a number of changes over the years. There were minor changes made to the jersey including shrinking the size of the Crest. 1992 would see the biggest change to the Wales Rugby Shirt so far when the white collar turned green. In addition a Dragon decal was added to the right sleeve. A white band was added to each sleeve two years later, creating a Wales Rugby Shirt that has become iconic. A new kit supplier in 1996 saw the dragon decal disappear and the green collar return to white. Changes to the Welsh Rugby Shirt has often included the addition of white and green.
