However, the revolution began with the arrival of coach Jack Rowell in 1978. Rowell transformed the club. He began recruiting players from outside of the area. When formalised competitions started in the 1980s. He introduced quality players like Gareth Chilcott and Roger Spurrell. In addition, John Horton and winger David Trick.

Bath Rugby Successful Era

By 1984. The first of ten knock-out cup successes had been achieved. These were at the expense of Bristol. Also, Bath Rugby dominated the John Player Cup. They won it four years in a row. This was from 1984 to 1987. The cup sponsor changed to Pilkington. And Bath after losing in 1988. Then dominated that cup as well winning it a further six times.

The formal league structure started in 1987. And Bath dominated the early years of the competition. They won six times in eight years. And did the “double” four times. Bath Rugby was an unstoppable force in 1988–89. They ran away with the league title. This was done by winning the first ten of their eleven league matches. In addition, Bath Rugby played their arch rival Leicester. This was in the Pilkington Cup final at Twickenham. Which Bath won 10–6. To become the first English club to wrap up the double of winning both League and Cup.

1990 Six Consecutive Twickenham Finals

1990 saw the last of six consecutive Twickenham final wins. They defeated Gloucester 48–6. Success followed in 1993–94. When Bath Rugby won a unique “Grand Slam” of titles. In addition to the league. The team won the Pilkington Cup. In addition, the Middlesex Sevens. Also, the Worthington Tens.
