Bath Rugby Captain Frank Soane leading by example

Wing forward Frank Soane captained Bath on the day. His last of his eight-year stint. His captaincy began in 1890 through to 1898. He made over 300 appearances. And enjoying a 50-year association with the Club.  During this time, Soane won four caps with England. Becoming only the second Bath player to appear for his country. Although not especially big.

His remarkable strength and tackling earned him the nickname “Buster”. Soane was a driving force in the Club’s move to the Rec. He remained a towering presence off the field long after retiring from the game.

The funny incident following missed conversion

The Welsh side was exceptionally strong and included three Cardiff Club backs. And two of their forwards. The referee struggled to pronounce Llwynypia. And in the end, decided to call the Llwynypia side Wales. You could hear him blow his whistle and then call.  “Free kick to Wales!”

The Cardiff Express recorded a funny incident: “Bath Rugby’s Soane scored the single try for his side. And then when the kick at goal was taken and failed. One of the Bath’s three quarters followed up. And, touching the ball down wanting another try. Bob Jones, told the Bath man he ought to take it out and have another kick at goal.”
