It was also the Cornish rugby team that can boast an Olympic silver medal. The added incentive for the winner of the County Championship was the chance to represent Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Only three of Cornwall’s players had previously represented England.
France, Australasia and Great Britain had entered the 1908 Summer Olympics. The Australasian team was a combination of the Australian Rugby team and New Zealand players. Just before the tournament, France withdrew leaving Great Britain (Cornwall County Champions) playing Australasia. They scored 32–3 in final to Australasia with Bert Solomon managing to lone try for Great Britain.
Moreover, Australasia was far too strong for the Cornish Great Britain team and won the gold medal. The final score was 32 points to 3. It played at the White City Stadium in really poor conditions, fog, mist and with a muddy field.
Cornwall reached the Championship final many times, including 1909, 1928, 1958, 1969 and 1989 but had to wait until 1991 to win the trophy. It was a memorable final for most Cornish fans. Twickenham was the venue and a highly fancied and Yorkshire were the opponents who wore a White Yorkshire Rugby Shirt.
There were 54,000 fans in attendance and Cornwall took more supporters to the capital than Yorkshire. The game had everything, and all seemed lost when after 54 minutes, Cornwall found themselves trailing by 16 point to 3. Cornwall fought back to draw level at 16-16 after 80 minutes. The game then went into extra time when Cornwall’s Richard Nanckivell’s two tries were the inspiration for the victory.
Cornwall plays most of their home games at Redruth R.F.C and Camborne RFC. However, it also played at a few matches at Penzance & Newlyn and Launceston.
The premier club side in Cornwall are the Cornish Pirates who play in the RFU Championship. Other notable clubs in Cornwall are Redruth R.F.C., Mount’s Bay, Falmouth, Hayle, Penryn, Bude, Camborne, St Austell, St. Ives, Saltash, Newquay Hornets, Truro and Wadebridge Camels.
