The words Ellis and Rugby are strongly linked following the incident at Rugby School in 1823, when a pupil of the school by the name of Ellis picked up the ball and ran during a game of football.
In those early days teams consisted of around 20 per side, but in 1877 this was reduced to 15 players per team.
