And Wales hosted it. The tournament was created and largely organised by four women. The women who were with the Richmond Women’s Rugby Club. They were Sue Dorrington, Alice Cooper, Deborah Griffin and Mary Forsyth.
A total of twelve countries were divided into four groups of three. The USA defeated New Zealand in the semi-finals. Then against the odds, they won the championship with a 19–6 victory over England. In the Plate competition, Canada defeated Spain 18 points to 4.
The tournament made a financial loss. But, anonymous businessmen pledged at the post-tournament celebratory dinner to make up a portion of the deficit. English Rugby made up the remainder of the debt.
