1996 once again England. Captained by Will Carling won the Five Nations Championship. Also, they picked up the Triple Crown. Their only defeat was in the first game of the tournament away to France in Paris.
England introduced a new half-back combination of Matt Dawson and Paul Grayson. In the forwards Lawrence Dallaglio, Graham Rowntree, and Mark Regan were influential. It was the kicking of Fly-Half Paul Grayson that almost got England a victory over the French at the Parc des Princes. However, France scored three penalties and a drop goal from Thierry Lacroix. And a further drop goal from Thomas Castaignède. The game finished 15 points to 12.
1996 Five Nations – Wales & Scotland
Wales were next up at Twickenham. In another tight game, England came out on top 21 points to 15. Try scorers included Jeremy Guscott and Rory Underwood. Once again Grayson was influential adding a conversion and three penalties. For Wales Rob Howley and Hemi Taylor crossed for tries. Arwel Thomas contributed through a conversion and a penalty goal.
Scotland’s Grand Slam ambitions were halted by England at Murrayfield. In a try-less game. It was once again the kicking of Paul Grayson that made the difference. Michael Dods kicked three penalties for the Scots. However, Grayson’s six penalties resulted in a 18 points to 9 victory to the visitors.
1996 England Rugby Five Nations inspiration – Final Weekend
On the final weekend of the 1996 Five Nations Championship. France went to Cardiff with a Championship victory in sight. But Wales dashed the French hopes with a narrow 16-15 win. England continued their fine form by defeating Ireland 28 points to 15. Jon Sleightholme scored the lone try. Once again, Grayson added a conversion, six penalties, and a drop goal for good measure.
Five Nations Championship 1996
The 1996 Five Nations Championship was the first in the sport’s professional era. In summary. Ten matches were played over five weekends from 20 January to 16 March. England were the winners, losing only the first game with France, thus missing the Grand Slam, but winning the Triple Crown.
France went into the final week needing a victory to clinch the championship themselves thanks to superior points difference but lost by a single point to Wales, who not only avoided a whitewash but climbed above Ireland on points difference in doing so.
Scotland missed out on a fourth Grand Slam after losing to England at Murrayfield, this was the second successive season Scotland lost out on a Grand Slam.
