Probables v Possibles

Historically, England Rugby trial matches have been titled Probables v Possibles. One of the famous trial games involved the Russian Prince, Alexander Obolensky. The flying prince scored three tries in the national team’s final trial, “England” versus “The Rest”, at Twickenham on 21 December 1935. However, North v South or England v The Rest has often been used. Ireland opted for Whites v Blues. The All Blacks to have chosen New Zealand v The Rest. But, South Island and North Island trial matches have usually split up the teams using the header Probables v Possibles.

A Team v B Team

Also, Wales and Scotland have widely used Probables v Possibles. But the Welsh have marketed the trial game as Wales A v Wales B. Most notably in 1964 when the game was used to help select the international team for their tour to South Africa. Clive Rowlands captained the A team. And Haydn Morgan skippered the B team. Playing opposite each other on that day were Newport’s David Watkins and John Mantle. Both players went on to have exceptional Rugby League careers.
