An Introduction to Vintage England Rugby T-Shirt

The Vintage England Rugby T-Shirt Heritage Style features the famous vintage red rose on the left chest. Inspired by the great England Rugby teams of the past, including the successful 1928 England Rugby team.

The 1928 England Rugby Grand Slam was unexpected. The successful team of the early 1920s had retired. Including influential captain Wavell Wakefield. Ronald Cove-Smith had taken over the leadership.

Ronald Cove-Smith played at the Old Merchant Taylors and King’s College Hospital RFC linking his professional life as a physician with his love of sport and in particular rugby football. He represented England rugby union team in a total of 29 tests including 7 as Captain. Also, he captained the British & Irish Lions in four tests on the 1924 British Lions tour to South Africa playing at lock forward. He had an exceptional record for England winning 22 of his 29 matches.

England Rugby opened their 1928 campaign with a with a 10-8 win in Cardiff. Both teams scored 2 tries. England through William Kirwan-Taylor and Colin Laid. But it was the superior kicking of Centre James Richardson that gave England a narrow 10 points to 8 victory.

Their second game against Ireland at Lansdowne Road, Dublin was even tighter. A narrow 7 points to 6 victory. Ireland actually outscored England by two tries to one, but once again it was Centre James Richardson effectively winning the game with a lone try and drop goal.

Then they entertained France at Twickenham Stadium in front of a crowd of 70,000. This was a much more comfortable victory by 18 points to 8. Winger Godfrey Palmer and Flanker Joe Periton both scored a brace of tries and James Richardson converted three out of four.

England again enjoyed a home advantage in their final game against Scotland. Tries by Joe Hanley and 19-year-old Colin Laird saw off Scotland 6-0 at Twickenham. Laird gained his first cap in 1927 against Wales when he was just 18 years and 124 days.
