After its introduction there was a large amount of encouragement to play Rugby in France as it was a way to strengthen the young male population. The formation of the first French Rugby club took place during the 1880’s in Paris, the club was titled ‘Racing Club’. On 26 February 1890, a French rugby team recruited from the Janson Desailly Lyceum defeated an international team at the Bois de Boulogne in front of 2,000 spectators.

Although France were represented at the 1900 Summer Olympics, their first official test match did not take place until New Year’s Day, 1906. This match took place in Paris against the New Zealand All Blacks. Frances first international championship triumph was in the 1959 Five Nations Championship. 1959 was the first year that France won overall, they had previously been joint winners on two occasions.
