In its first season. Membership reached 100. And
London Irish boasted three teams. This was a magnificent achievement. Which says much about the commendable early organisation at the club. There was some good opposition to meet early on, too. Such as Harlequins. That London Irish played for the first time on 3 November 1900. This game was played at Herne Hill which produced a 5-0 victory for London Irish.
London Irish Rugby v London Welsh rivals
The following month. On 8 December 1900. London Irish were the first visitors to yet another ground tried out by London Welsh. This was Lower Welsh Harp in Hendon. Infact, it was their tenth ground in just 12 years. The match attracted a very large crowd, around 1,500. London Welsh visited Herne Hill, first home of London Irish. On 27 January 1900.The Walsh brothers, G.C. and J.N. Walsh, helped the likes of Dyas, Magee. And the committee in providing London Irish with a good early structure. This helped establish the club.
Club strength in depth
In season 1903-04. The club’s ‘B’ team played 21 matches. They won 16 and drew one. With just four defeats. Points for 221. Points against 60. This gave the club strength in depth. And set a proud tradition for the exploits of the ‘B XV at London Irish.
