An Introduction to London Irish Rugby Shirt

London Irish Rugby Shirt. Our design inspiration. The legendary Louis Magee.

Following the formation of the club. By late September 1898, London Irish RFC was ready for action. The first game was played on the 1st of October against Hammersmith. Played at Herne Hill Athletic Ground in South East London. London Irish won by eight points to three.

Fortunately in London at the time was a veterinary surgeon. Louis Magee, a leading Irish rugby international who represented Ireland 27 times. He played between 1895 and 1904 as a fly-half.

He was a vital recruit for London Irish. And attracted others of his countrymen to the new club.

Louis Magee’s presence together with that of the club’s first captain. R.S. Days was to have a major impact on progress. Such was their influence that regular fixtures were soon arranged with most of London’s leading clubs. Such as Blackheath, Rosslyn Park. Also, Saracens and Wasps.

Inspiration for our heritage collection goes back to the formation of the London Irish club. The jerseys on the first team photograph from 1898. Features a badge that looks to be quite similar to that of the London Irish Rifles. Although it has four shamrocks also.

It is believed this first badge was heavily influenced by the London Irish Rifles’ Regiment Crest. Which included a harp surrounded by shamrocks.

The club had strong links with the regiment in the early years. And sometime around 1908, they became the County of London regiment. And their regimental badge features the crest from the City of London above a portcullis.

Another explanation may simply be the shirts were Ireland international jerseys of that era. It is a possibility. However, the formation of the shamrocks in the crest looks very different.

Our interpretation of this historic symbol. Includes the four shamrocks and the harp from London Irish Rifles crest. In addition, we’ve added the crown of St George. With a red sword of St Paul. As the County of London regiment’s crest.
