A Distinguished War Career

But when war broke out in 1914 he enlisted in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons (Ulster Division). In addition, he served later in the 3rd-18th London Regiment, the London Irish Rifles. Also, the 1st-4th London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). All his service was in France. And in 1917 he was severely wounded. When he was demobilised in 1919. He returned to Ireland and embarked upon a distinguished legal career.

London Irish Rugby Great WE Crawford Retires

Crawford played most of his club rugby for Lansdowne. But made his final appearance in a London Irish shirt. In the Exiles match against London Welsh. A small cutting. Under the heading ‘Crawford’s Swan Song’, records the historic end to a fine career:

I was sorry to hear that Ernie Crawford. One of Ireland’s very greatest rugby full-backs. Probably played his last game in London last Saturday. He turned out for London Irish. Against the Welsh and played a surprisingly good game. His penalty goal was a fine effort.

Ireland Rugby International Star

Crawford was a remarkable 28 years old when he had made his debut for Ireland. ‘His debut was characterised by a splendid display in the art and craft of full-back play,’ said one account. Thereafter, he earned 30 caps. Playing at international level until he was 36. And captaining his country. By the time of that appearance for London Irish, he would have been 38.
