In the early years. Socks worn for playing rugby often complimented the design of the playing jersey. Hooped-designed shirts which were one of the earliest forms of classic designs were usually integrated into the socks design also. The Barbarians. The most famous rugby Invitation XV teams play in black and white hoops. But players are encouraged to wear socks from their own club strip. A tradition that goes back to the formation of the club in 1890.

rugby school players wore their school flannels. In 1871 the first official “kit” consisted of an ordinary shirt and bow tie. With a thin vest over the top, trousers, socks, and heavy-duty boots. The rules also dictated that players at the school of Rugby should wear “dark serge trousers, black, and scarlet striped jerseys. And socks”.
