While the game is relatively new to New York, the USA has an interesting history in Rugby League. In late 1953, the American All Stars followed up on their tour of Australia and New Zealand by visiting France. The squad was quite different to the previous tourists and many of the players had never played Rugby League. It is detailed in the book ‘No Helmets Required’.

A few had played Rugby Union, but the majority had come from an American Football background. They flew from Los Angeles to New York. Then all the way to Ireland before they finally arrived in Paris. From the French capital, then took a train down to Carcassonne where they would be based for part of the tour.

The team booked in to the Hotel de Ville in the medieval southern city of Carcassonne. Here they met Antoine Blain who had coached and managed the famous France Rugby League team of 1951, 1955, 1960 and 1964. In addition, they were entertained by Paul Barrière who is renowned as being the driving force behind the formation of the Rugby League World Cup  Barrière was also the President of A.S. Carcassonne Rugby League club.

Languedoc XIII 30 American All Stars 22

The All Stars first game was on Sunday the 20th December 1953 against the Languedoc XIII Rugby League selection. It was a difficult start for the novice team from the USA. The core of the Languedoc included was players from Carcassonne who at the time were French Champions and holders of the Lord Derby Cup.

As expected the hosts took an early lead, but Larry Marino intercepted a pass to race past the covering Poletti to get the USA on the score board. But they were behind by 8 points to 3. The French team continued dominate the game in the second half. Gilbert Benausse was outstanding and created the space for Lessalle’s hat-trick of tries. Xavier Mena scored two tries for the All Stars and Willie Richardson capped a fine debut with a try. The barrel-chested Tony Rappa also got over for a try.

The game finished Languedoc XIII Rugby League selection 30 American All Stars 22.
