While the game is relatively new to New York. The USA has an interesting history in Rugby League. Back in the 1950s, 20 young American footballers flew off around the world playing rugby league. A game they’d never even heard of. Miraculously, the American All Stars competed with the best Australia, New Zealand and France had to offer.
This squad was led by Mike Dimitro. Dimitro a wrestling promoter and former NFL Rams player and UCLA football all star. The team played an incredible 26 matches against both New Zealand and Australian teams. During the 22-man tourists wore American football-like uniforms. And won six games as well as drawing two. The highlight was the second match of the tour at Sydney Cricket Ground. The match against a Sydney side that drew a huge crowd of 65,453 fans.
Mike Dimitro managed to organize two exhibitions. Against New Zealand and Australia in California. And he led an American team to France in early 1954. Including a match in Paris against the France national team.
The USA were invited to play in the inaugural Rugby World Cup. Also in 1954. But this was then withdrawn. As it felt they would not be competitive. Following the competition, Australia and New Zealand played promotional games in the USA.
The next serious attempt was by Mike Mayer. Mike organised a national team to play a match against Canada in 1987. This was be the USA’s first international match since the 1954. The following year he found himself involved in promoting an exhibition game between the English teams the Wigan Warriors. And the Warrington Wolves at County Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Wigan defeated Warrington 12-5, in front of a crowd of 17,773.
