An Introduction to New Zealand Rugby Shirt Vintage All Blacks

The New Zealand Rugby Shirt design is produced by Ellis Rugby.  Charles John Monro introduced New Zealand to Rugby in 1870. Monro had played the game whilst studying at Christ’s College Finchley, in London. On his return to New Zealand, he took the sport to Nelson College. The college played the first rugby union match against the football club of Nelson. Later that year he organised a fixture between Wellington and Nelson. It soon spread through Wellington, then Wanganui, Auckland and Hamilton. Canterbury and Wellington soon followed and by 1870 a formal structure was imposed.

By 1879 both Canterbury and Wellington had formed Unions. The New South Wales team toured the country in 1882, visiting both islands. In 1884 a full New Zealand team organised a return visit to New South Wales. In 1888, the first ever British Isles rugby team toured Australia and New Zealand. The tourists won all their fixtures against New Zealand teams except for one, losing to Auckland.

In 1905 the New Zealand team, who became known as the “Originals”, toured the British Isles and France. Their opening fixture was against Devon whom they beat 55–4. They won every game against English teams, including a 32–0 victory over Blackheath and a 16–3 victory over Durham the English county champions. In international games, they defeated Ireland, Scotland, and England. However, they suffered their only loss of the tour to Wales at Cardiff Arms Park by 3–0.

They won against four Welsh club teams and played France in their inaugural test match in Paris. They visited North American on their way home, defeating both two matches Canadian teams. In their record – played thirty-five games, five Tests matches, scored 976 points and conceded only 59 and lost only once against Wales.

The name ‘All Blacks’ dates from the first tour of the UK by a New Zealand national rugby team, the Originals, in 1905-06. According to Billy Wallace, one of the members of the Originals, a London newspaper quoted – ‘the New Zealanders played as if they were “all blacks” – which in fact, should have been – “all backs”. This simple typographical error is to blame for the now-famous team name.
