An Introduction to North Sydney Bears Shirt Retro Rugby League 1971

North Sydney joined the inaugural Australian Rugby League competition in 1908, and provided Australia’s first captain of a Kangaroo Tour squad to England, Dinny Lutge.
The Bears club was formed as a foundation club of the newly formed rugby league game. This was in 1908. And were initially known as the Shoremen. The club was formed at the North Sydney School of Arts in Mount Street on 7 February 1908. Like the other Sydney district clubs. Norths were largely born from players and officials from the local Rugby Union club. This was Northern Suburbs Rugby Club. Also, they played their first real home game in 1910 at North Sydney Oval.

NRL Grand Final Appearances

They had a golden period in the 1920s. Winning 2 premierships in 1921–22. Under the coaching of the legendary Chris McKivat. It was some 21 years later when they next made the Grand Final. In 1943 under Captain-coach Frank Hyde they were beaten by Newtown 34–7.
