Northampton Saints Retro Polo Shirt – a breeding ground for quality players.

In the 1950s, Northampton Saints became a breeding ground for some of the finest backs in England. Jeff Butterfield was a prince among centres. Whose name is still revered in South Africa for his exploits with the 1955 British & Irish Lions.
Lewis Cannell was another centre whose talent was matched only by his dedication to his medical studies. He refused to tour with the 1950 Lions because he could not take six months away from the university. Cannell was one of the many players who emerged from the club in the period after the Second World War. To become mainstays of the England team. His decade-long international playing career ended with a contribution to the grand-slam season of 1957.

Lewis Cannell – Northampton Saints Classic Centre

Lewis Cannell played 19 times at centre for England. Winning the first of his caps against France in 1948. Before going to Oxford University, where he won three successive Blues. He came from a strong Midland base. Having been born in Coventry and attended St Richard’s College in Droitwich. Before moving to Northampton Grammar School. Where he played for the local club while still a schoolboy.

Dickie Jeeps – Northampton Saints Quality Scrum-Half

And then there was Dickie Jeeps. A scrum-half whose first British & Irish Lions cap preceded his England debut. Jeeps toured three times with the Lions He played 13 Tests in all. And became RFU president in 1976/77. Jeeps played at scrum-half 24 times for England. Including all four matches of the Grand Slam season of 1957.

Jeeps were selected to join the British Lions party to tour South Africa in 1955. And is one of that select group of players capped for the British Lions before being capped by his country. Jeeps felt that his selection for the Lions. Was due to playing an invitation match. Along with Cliff Morgan in Cornwall shortly before the Lions party was announced. “I think Cliff got me in the party because he liked my service.” Despite being originally the third choice scrum-half. In the 1955 squad, he played in all four tests of the drawn series.

Also, some great Northampton Saints Forwards

But the forwards should not be forgotten either. Especially Ron Jacobs, a prop whose 470 appearances for Saints over 17 years. Will almost certainly never be surpassed. He would be followed in the 1960s. By the likes of David Powell and Bob Taylor. Both of them played for England and the Lions. But it was the backs of the fifties that established Northampton’s production line within the rugby world.
