An Introduction to Old Boys Rugby T-Shirt

The Old Boys Rugby T-Shirt Vintage style is inspired by the early pioneers of the game of Rugby Football.

There were various versions of the handling ‘rugby-type’ game. They played in schools such as Shrewsbury, Cheltenham and Marlborough. At the same time there were different versions of the kicking ’soccer-type’ game. The games were played at Winchester, Harrow, Charterhouse, Eton and Westminster.

Rugby School had developed Rugby football a handling game played under Rugby rules. Under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Arnold the head of Rugby School. The game became so popular in contrast to the games of other schools, such as Eton, Winchester or Harrow.

Rugby inspires the Olympic Games

Inspired by reading Tom Brown’s School Days, Pierre de Coubertin visited Rugby several times during the 1880s. And they concluded that organised sport could be used to raise the aspirations and improve the behaviour of young people. This idea fuelled his vision for universal amateur athletics. In 1896 this culminated, in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. As one world expert on Olympic history said, ‘Thomas Arnold was the single most important influence on the life and thought of Pierre de Coubertin .

During the middle of the 19th century, former ‘Old Boys’ students of Rugby school (and other Rugby playing schools such as Marlborough School) started to spread their version of Rugby Football. Former pupil, Arthur Pell founded a club at Cambridge University in 1839. The Old Rugbeians then challenged the Old Etonians to a game of football and there was controversy at the Rugbeians’ use of their hands during the match.

To begin with, ‘Old Boys’ who had played the game as schoolboys formed clubs to enable them to continue playing their favorite school game. Others were encouraged to join them. The introduction of the rail network during this period allowed the game to spread across the British isles.
