Firstly, Scotland had already beaten France 25-4. Secondly, Wales 24-14 in Cardiff. Thirdly, Ireland 14-8 in Dublin. Finally, it was England that stood between them and their first Grand Slam. The game was fiercely contested. With the lead changing hands three times.
England scored first with a penalty goal. But hit back with a converted try: 5-3. Then, two English tries followed. But, only one was converted. England led 5-11.
Scotland scored a controversial try with only 25 minutes to go. The English alleged that the Scottish player’s foot had gone into touch before the ball was grounded. However, the Welsh referee Mr. Freethy awarded the try. And it was converted. This took the Scots to within two points of victory at 10-11.
