The U.S. Olympic Committee sent a USA rugby team to compete in the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. France, Romania and the USA were the teams invited. It was expected the France team would be far too strong for the other nations. Also, it was felt France would win the gold medal.

The U.S. Olympic Committee sent a USA rugby team to compete in the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. France, Romania and the USA were the teams invited. It was expected the France team would be far too strong for the other nations. Also, it was felt France would win the gold medal.
USA’s first game held against Romania. It was on Sunday, 11th May at the Colombes Stadium in Paris. The American team surprised both their European opposition and the Parisian crowd. The French public were impressed by the standard of their play. The 6,000 mainly French supporters in the stadium booed every time the USA touched the ball. In contrast, they cheered when the Romanian team were in possession. This tactic had no impact on the USA team. And if anything made them a stronger group of players.
The USA Rugby team scored a total of eight tries. Centre Richard Hyland went over for four tries. Flanker Jack Patrick crossed for three tries. While Norman Cleaveland affectionately known as ‘Peabody’ scored the other try. In addition, Full Back Charles Doe kicked five conversions in the 37 points to nil victory.
With France also easily defeating Romania 59-3 everything became set for the final showdown. France v USA French fans again booed and hissed. They even threw rocks and bottles at American Officials and players. But the intimidating atmosphere only motivated the visitors further. The game finished France 3 USA 17.
