An Introduction to Rugby League 1895 T-Shirt Vintage Grey

The Rugby League 1895 T-Shirt is inspired by the formation of the game of Rugby League Football. On 29 August, 1895 at the George Hotel in Huddersfield representatives of northern clubs met. They met to form the new code of Rugby Football.

Rugby League’s history as a separate form of rugby football goes back to 1895 in Huddersfield. This is when the Northern Rugby Football Union broke away from Rugby Football Union to form their own separate organisation. Also, there were similar break-aways in New Zealand and Australia in 1907.

Over time the rugby played in these new competitions formed into a distinctly different sport. Eventually, the game changed its name from Northern Rugby Football Union to Rugby League as a result of the professional leagues that administered it.

Rugby League’s Working Class Roots

Although many types of football had been played throughout the world. It wasn’t until late 19th century that these games began well organised and consistent rules applied. In 1871, twenty one London based clubs who played the football game from Rugby School met to form the game of Rugby. The game took hold and it became extremely popular in the Northern English counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire. In the south east, clubs were largely middle class, but in the north it became a working class game.
