In 1986, Western Samoa was invited to participate in the third edition of the Rugby League Pacific Cup, which took place in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The tournament, coordinated by the New South Wales Rugby League, sought to involve players of Pacific Island heritage, allowing teams from Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, and Western Samoa to compete on an international platform. The formation of the Samoa Rugby League can be traced back to 1985. When Auckland-based Swanny Stowers and his wife, Lyndsay, took the bold step to register the Western Samoa Rugby League. Western Samoa’s second game of the tournament was a fierce battle against Tonga.Which would later be infamously dubbed the “Bloodbath in the Jungle.” Despite sustaining several injuries, both teams fought hard, but Tonga ultimately emerged victorious. Winning 34-16. However, the Samoan squad did not lose hope. Instead, they regrouped and focused on their next challenge.
Redemption and Victory Over Tonga
Western Samoa bounced back from the loss, defeating the Cook Islands with a resounding 48-0 victory to reach the semi-finals. This set up a rematch against Tonga. Determined to redeem their earlier defeat, Samoa executed a flawless game plan, thrashing Tonga 46-4 in what was a highly physical and fast-paced match. This victory propelled them into the tournament final.
The Final Showdown with New Zealand Maori
In the final, Western Samoa faced a formidable New Zealand Maori team that had been unbeaten throughout the tournament. Players like Gary Mercer, Tawera Nikau, and Sam Stewart led the Maori team, who were experienced and poised to win.
