Manufactured by Ellis Rugby, Samoa Rugby Union Shirt Polo Retro Style is an exceptional quality shirt. At the 1991 Rugby World Cup Samoa met Wales on the 6th October 1991 at the National Stadium in Cardiff. Wales were expected to comfortably defeat the Samoan team.

However, things did not go to plan for the Wales Rugby Union team. The Samoan team included a talented line-up. The team included Apollo Perelini, Frank Bunce, Brian Lima and Pat Lam.

Manu Samoa were captain by Prop Forward Peter Fatialofa. He made his name playing for Ponsonby in New Zealand in 1981. And he won the Gallaher Shield eight times between 1981 and 1995. Also, he played 72 representative games for Auckland from 1985 to 1993. His international debut was against Ireland in 1988 on the tour of Wales and Ireland.

From the moment Wales kicked off in the Rugby World Cup group match, the Pacific Islanders, in their first ever World Cup, lived up to their reputation as aggressive tacklers. None more so than Brian Lima.  Lima earned the nickname of “The Chiropractor” for his shuddering hits on the pitch that supposedly rearranged the bones of the victim. Being a tremendous player, he was recognised by the IRB Hall of Fame and in 2011 inducted in to the Hall of Fame.

Samoa’s tries came from To’o Vaega and Sila Vaifale. Also, Scrum half Matthew Vaea scored two penalties and one conversion. In reply, Wales scored tries through Ieuan Evans and Arthur Emyr and a single penalty and conversion by Mark Ring. However, it wasn’t enough for the Welsh as they came unstuck against a hugely unfancied Samoan side.

For Samoan Rugby, this was one of the proudest moments for the nation who only have around 2,000 players to select from. This result remains one of the biggest upsets in rugby World Cup history.
