In the early days, partly due to the isolation of the islands, international games for Western Samoa confined to the other South Sea islands of Fiji and Tonga. It wasn’t until 1988 that Samoan rugby left its mark on the international game when they toured Wales. Although they faced defeat by 32 points to 14, the Samoa team produced a very competitive display. In the 1991 Rugby World Cup match against Wales at the Cardiff Arms Park, they shocked the home crowd to record 16 points to 13 wins.

The Samoa rugby union team used to perform the traditional ‘Maulu’ulu Moa’ before matches. Just before the 1991 Rugby World Cup, the ‘Manu’ war chant composed and all Samoan sporting teams perform the “Manu Siva Tau” before each match. It is considered to be more effective at psyching up players.
Many players have traditional Samoan tattoos (tatau), pe’a (male tatau), malu (female tatau). The tattoos demonstrate the strong ties many Samoans feel for their culture. The geometric patterns are based on ancient designs that often denote rank and status. The va’a (canoe), for example, stretches across a man’s mid-back.
