The history behind the Tonga Rugby Shirt Polo
Manufactured by Ellis Rugby, Tonga Rugby Shirt Polo Retro Style is exceptional quality. Our inspiration for this design comes from the history of Tonga Rugby Union.
In 1973 an unknown Tonga Rugby Union team visited Australia for a two test series. The first Test went as expected to the Wallabies by 30 points to 12 in Sydney.
However, in the second Test on the 30th June 1973, the ʻIkaleTahi’ got their revenge. They defeated Australia at Ballymore, Brisbane by 16 points to 11. Also, they scored four tries. They scored through Centre Tali Kavapalu. In addition, through Left Winger Sami Latu and Right Winger Isikeli Vave. Their inspirational Captain Sione Mafi Pahulu scored the other try. The powerfully built Number 8 forward played his rugby in Australia with Brisbane Souths.
A year later he skippered the first ever Tonga Rugby Union tour to the United Kingdom. He captained the tour when they played 10 games. The matches against Scotland and Wales were both lost by 44–8 and by 26–7. However, they did perform better in their final tour Test match against Canada in Vancouver. On the 25th of October who they comfortably defeated by 40 points to 14.
