An Introduction to Vintage Australia Rugby Shirt Polo

The Vintage Australia Rugby Shirt Polo is inspired by the pioneers of Rugby Football and Daniel Brendon “Dan” Carrol. Carrol has a fascinating involvement with both rugby in Australia and latterly in the USA.

In 2016 Daniel Carroll inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Which recognised his special achievement. And contribution to the sport of rugby union.

Carroll was selected for his country’s first tour to the northern hemisphere. By the official Australia national rugby union team. He was only 20 years old and the youngest member of the tour squad.

The first tour match in England was against Devon which the tourists won. They were then pitted against Gloucestershire and Cornwall. Who they defeated 16-nil and 18-5. It was then on to Wales and they enjoyed victories against Glamorgan, Penygraig RFC and a combined Neath/Aberavon team. They faced defeat in the next game against Llanelli RFC 8 points to 3. And following cancellation of their match with Monmouthshire due to a waterlogged pitch they headed to London.

A 3-nil victory over Richmond set the tourists up for their next game. The 1908 Olympic Games held in London. Whilst the Wallabies on tour and the team received an invitation to play in the competition. Unfortunately, France withdrew. So they teamed up against the current English rugby champions Cornwall who were representing Great Britain.

Only 23 days earlier Australia had beaten Cornwall in one of the early tour matches. So the tourists were confident they would win the Gold Medal. As it transpired Chris McKivat led the Wallabies to an easy 32–3 victory and to Olympic glory. With each Wallaby in that match receiving an Olympic gold medal and the runners up Cornwall (Great Britain) the Silver medal.

Also, Carroll had played well in the Olympic final game. And was chosen for the first Test of the tour against Wales at Cardiff Arms Park. Wales defeated Australia by 9 points to 6.

In the second test against England, Australia emerged winners by 9 points to 3. A game which saw former Northampton Saints legend Edgar Mobbs score the first try for England. The Wallabies  scored a try through Norman Row. Who followed up an ‘Up and under’. And then Boxer Russell scored a brace of tries to secure the victory.

In total the Wallabies played 31 games, winning 25, losing five and drawing one.

At the end of the tour Carroll’s captain in the Olympic game. Chris McKivat led fourteen of the Wallabies into the professional ranks. With the fledgling rugby league code in Sydney. Carroll though stayed loyal to rugby union. And was again selected in the Wallabies squad for the 1912 Australia rugby union tour of USA and Canada.

Although they faced defeat in the tour matches. They played to their potential in the Test match of November 1912. Against the United States at Berkeley which they won 12–8. Carroll was one of Australia’s best players as he ran the game at fly-half and scored an excellent try.

Following the end of the tour, Carroll decided he would not return to Australia. Instead, he stayed in the United States. His rugby career continued. And he was selected for the All-America team against the All Blacks in 1913, a Test won by the All Blacks 51–3.
