The early rules of rugby usually decided by those participating before a game took place. A decision took place as to whether or not it was legal to run with the ball shortly before kick-off. The production of the first set of written rules took place in 1845. Pupils at Rugby School produced these rules. However, people were playing many variations of Rugby at the time.

In 1848 the Cambridge rules published which included “running with the ball”. Also, the rules included “hacking” (kicking an opponent in the shins). Player numbers were initially 20 each side. But reduced to 15 in 1877. The official formation of the game of Rugby took place in 1871. This is when the adoption of the Rugby rulesby the original 21 Clubs took place.

William Webb Ellis was an excellent all-round sportsman and after leaving Rugby School, he played cricket for Oxford University against Cambridge University in 1827. He graduated with a BA in 1829 and received his MA in 1831. Ellis will however always be remembered for the famous incident in 1823 which helped form the great game of rugby. Rugby Football should not be the only sport that William Webb Ellis is remembered for. This is because he was a fine cricketer in addition to being a good scholar.
