In 1991 after years of disappointment Geoff Cooke’s exciting England side sealed their first Grand Slam for 11 years with a hard-fought victory over France on the 16th March at Twickenham Stadium.
Simon Hodgkinson’s kicking, combined with Mike Teague’s try earned England a 25-6 win in Cardiff to start their campaign. England then defeated Scotland 21-12 and Ireland 16-7 before a classic ‘Le Crunch’ showdown with France at home. Despite Philippe Saint-Andre scored one of the game’s greatest tries for France. England replied through Rory Underwood’s try and Hodgkinson’s penalties saw them home 21-19.
They made history the following year with back-to-back Grand Slams. During the 1992 campaign England scored 14 tries in four games. These included a 25-7 win over Scotland. Ireland thumped at 38-9. Four tries through Morris, Underwood, Webb and a Penalty try secured a 31-13 victory in Paris. And Wales faced defeat at 24-0 to start the celebrations at Twickenham. Full back Jon Webb’s kicking was outstanding and he scored three tries for a total points contribution of 63
Will Carlingcaptained England. Carling became skipper at the age of 22 and his first match was a surprise victory over Australia by 28-19. During his time he led England he won a Grand Slam in 1995 as well as the 1991 and 1992 successes.
He also led England to the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup when they were narrowly beaten by Australia. His robust style seemed to compliment the silky running of his centre partner, Jeremy Guscott. In 1993 he became only the second captain to lead England to victories over the Springbok, Wallabies and All Blacks, after beating the New Zealand 15–9.
