An Introduction to Vintage Irish Rugby T-Shirt
The Vintage Ireland Rugby T-Shirt is a heritage style garment, inspired by the Irish Rugby teams of the past.
Ireland enjoyed success in the 1982 Five Nations Championship winning three out of their four matches. They won the Triple Crown, the first since the 1949 Grand Slam season.
Ireland were led by hooker Ciaran Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald made his test debut against Australia on 3 June 1979, during an Irish tour of Australia. As well as the Triple Crown in 1982, he also captained the team that won it in 1985 and the Five Nations Championship in 1983. In addition he also captained the British and Irish Lions team on their 1983 tour.
Wales visited Lansdowne Road for the opening game. A week later than scheduled due to a frozen pitch in Dublin. Ireland were too strong for Wales on the day. Wingers Trevor Ringland scored one try and Moss Finn a brace of tries. In addition Fly Half Ollie Campbell kicked a penalty and two conversions in the 20 points to 12 victory.
Next Ireland made the trip to Twickenham to face a strong English team Captained by Scrum Half Steve Smith. They included the likes of Clive Woodward, Mike Slemen, Peter Wheeler, Peter Winterbottom and were strong favourites particularly with home advantage. In a ‘nail-biting’ finish, Ireland just edged the game by 16 points to 15. The Irish tries came from Prop Ginger McLoughlin, Full Back Hugo MacNeill. The outstanding Ollie Campbell at Fly-Half kicked a conversion and 2 penalty goals. For England, Mike Slemen scored a try and Marcus Rose finished with a conversion and 3 penalty goals.
Scotland Rugby in Dublin and France Rugby in Paris
It was back to Dublin for the next game against a talented Scottish team Captained by the great Andy Irvine. With an outstanding backline that included Jim Renwick, David Johnston and John Rutherford Scotland caused the Irish plenty of problems. And it was Rutherford who ghosted through for the only try of the game. Ireland were reliant on the boot of Ollie Campbell who kicked superbly, slotting over 6 penalty goals. The game finished 21 points to 12.
A trip to the Parc des Princes in Paris on the final weekend. France had lost all their previous games, yet they were still a very strong team. Captained by Jean-Pierre Rives and included rugby legends in Serge Blanco and Pierre Berbizier. The temperamental French kept their best performance for the final game and denied the Irish of what would have been only their second ever Grand Slam. It finished 22-9 to France in Paris. A try from Patrick Mesny. A try and 2 long range penalties from Serge Blanco, plus 2 penalties and a conversion from Serge Cabernet. For Ireland Ollie Campbell kicked 3 penalties.
It finished in a disappointing fashion for Ireland, but overall the 1982 season had been extremely successful.
