The 1998 Women’s Rugby World Cup was the first world cup fully sanctioned by the International Rugby Board (IRB). The other two in 1991 and 1994 were not organise by the IRB. Later, the 1991 and 1994 competitions received recognition as genuine Women’s Rugby World Cup. The tournament took place in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.
Further, a record 16 teams competed in the 1998 Women’s Rugby World Cup. And the tournament enjoyed great media coverage. Several matches filmed for television. And a one-hour TV highlights programme produced for broadcast.
In the final New Zealand defeated the United States 44–12. Vanessa Cootes was the Black Ferns star running in four of New Zealand’s eight tries in a 44-12 victory. Also, England Women’s Rugby team easily defeated Canada in the 3rd – 4th Play-off game. The tournament was seen as a great success.
Moreover, the Black Ferns Annaleah Rush finished top points scorer with 73. This included 5 tries, 21 conversions and 2 penalties. The top try scorer was the Netherlands Minke Docter with nine tries. She pipped England’s Red Roses Nicky Brown with 8 tries and in third place Tammi Wilson with 7 tries.
