Magee was without question one of Ireland’s dozen top stars in rugby. He was an outstanding player for almost a decade. From 1895 to 1904 he played in ten winning sides. And skippered the Ireland Rugby Union team nine times. Also, he starred in two scoreless draws.
One of them was against Scotland in 1896 which stopped Ireland from winning the Triple Crown. However, when Ireland did win the Triple Crown in 1899. Magee played a big part, particularly in the final game against Wales in Cardiff.

Inspiration for our heritage collection goes back to the formation of the London Irish club. The jerseys on the first team photograph from 1898. Features a badge that looks to be quite similar to that of the London Irish Rifles. Although it has four shamrocks also.
It is believed this first badge was heavily influenced by the London Irish Rifles’ Regiment Crest. Which included a harp surrounded by shamrocks.
The club had strong links with the regiment in the early years. And sometime around 1908, they became the County of London regiment. And their regimental badge features the crest from the City of London above a portcullis.

Another explanation may simply be the shirts were Ireland international jerseys of that era. It is a possibility. However, the formation of the shamrocks in the crest looks very different.

Our interpretation of this historic symbol. Includes the four shamrocks and the harp from London Irish Rifles crest. In addition, we’ve added the crown of St George. With a red sword of St Paul. As the County of London regiment’s crest.
