An Introduction to Vintage South Africa Rugby Shirt Polo

This Vintage South Africa Rugby Shirt Polo is inspired  by the first South African Rugby tour of 1906-07.

Paul Roos captained the first South African team to tour the British Isles. The tour took place during 1906-07 with the South African team largely dominated by players from Western Province. They played 29 matches; including Tests against all four Home Nations.

The captain Paul Roos was born near the South African town of Stellenbosch. And he was a talented and popular rugby player. His own teammates had chosen him to captain the 1906 tour.

Like modern day South Africa Captains, Roos was gracious in victory or defeat and extremely articulate. Furthermore, he viewed the tour as an attempt to improve the relationship between his fellow countrymen and the British after the events of the Second Boer War. Also, he was  a devout Christian. Roos was an excellent ambassador for the game. He helped promote the South Africans as a fair and exciting sporting team.

Before Roos made his international debut he represented Western Provence against the 1903 Great Britain & Irish Lions tourists. He had an outstanding game in the 3-3 draw at Newlands. It was this performance that resulted in him being selected to represent the Springboks team in 1903 in the final Test against Great Britain & Irish Lions. The first two Test matches had both ended in draws. And when the South Africans won, they took their first series against a British team.

Manufacturing

Manufactured from 100% chunky pique cotton, the design of this Polo Shirt incorporates the vintage South Africa badge as well as Ellis Rugby branding. The vintage South African Crest features on the left chest of this Polo Shirt with Ellis Rugby branding on the arm.

In addition the Polo features a contrast inner placket, arms and collar stand. It has herringbone detail on the side vents and velvet tape on the neck opening.
