The transition to a structured game and regular season for Women’s Rugby has taken a long time. In 1994, the first Women’s Rugby World Cup teams arrived in Edinburgh. Both Kazakhstan and Ireland made their first appearances on the Women’s Rugby World Cup stage. However, the tournament almost didn’t go ahead. Scheduled to be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, it was cancelled only weeks before. Fortunately, Scotland managed to host and save the competition.
The Amsterdam organiser’s decision made due to a lack of support from the IRB and refusal to endorse. Due to this, the Unions of some countries decided not to pay team expenses. Also, some chose to withdraw their entries altogether. Some individual team members decided to go ahead. And they raised the money themselves. Women had trained so hard, and had spent lots of time raising money. They were understandably disappointed with the cancellation. Fortunately, Scotland took over the organisation. However, the IRB threatened sanctions against unions taking part in this unendorsed event.
Eventually, eleven of the original sixteen entrants took part. And it proved to be a great success. In the final, England got revenge for their 1991 by defeating the USA by 38 points to 23.
