An Introduction to the Wales Rugby League Rugby Shirt

The Wales Rugby League Shirt 1975 Vintage Style is inspired by the great team led by David Watkins.

There was change of format for the Rugby League World Cup in 1975. The games administrators agreed upon a different competition set-up from the original tournament which was played between the four nations in one country during a fixed period. The new format included ‘home and away’ games and spread over a period between March and November. A change of name was also agreed form Rugby World Cup to Rugby World Championship.

The inclusion of the Welsh Rugby League team followed an emotional return to the international game to Wales earlier in the year. When Wales Rugby League beat France 21-8 in the European Championship on February 16th at Swansea. It was the first time the Welsh had played on their own soil since in 24 years. As history would show , the inclusion of Wales Rugby League was to have a vital bearing on the destiny of the World Championship.

Wales play France, England, Kangaroos and Kiwis

The Championship kicked off in Toulouse in early March  with france accounting for Wales 14-7. Frank Wilson scored the lone try and Kel Coslett kicked two goals. For France winger Bernard Curt and Centre Rene Terrats scored tries, Victor Serrano kicked two goals and both Jacky Imbert and Jean-Pierre Lacoste both a drop goal each.

Next Wales played England a game which was to decide the World title. In a brutal encounter Wales won 12-7. The Welsh tactics were to keep the ball tight in the forward pack with the likes of Jim Mills, Tony Fisher, Bobby Wanbon and John Mantle. They ran out in to the pouring rain, fired up by coach Les Pearce and the comments of English Coach Alex Murphy. Murphy had appeared on an Australian TV Show and reportedly said “none of them (Welsh players) are good enough to get into the England team” They succeeded in knocking the English players off their stride and it was Clive Sullivan, Great Britain’s World Cup hero just three years earlier, who scored the winning try.

Four days later Wales backed  up against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The match against England had clearly taken its toll – and while the likes of Mills, Wanton and Kel Coslett matched the Aussies in the first half. It was the Kangaroos who finished stronger, eventually winning 30-13. Wales’s next game was at Carlaw Park  against New Zealand. Despite having Murray Eade sent off for a ‘stiff-arm’ on Wales Stand-Off Bill Francis, the Kiwis managed to hold-out 13-8.

Wales Rugby League back in Britain

Back in Britain, England gained revenge over Wales at Wilderspool, Warrington by 22-16. Peter Banner and Kel Coslett scored tries and Captain David Watkins kicked 5 goals. Next was another fiery game for Wales against the Australians. The Kangaroos had the outstanding winger Ian Schubert in their ranks who scored a hat-trick of tries in the 18-6 victory at St Helen’s in Swansea.
Wales then defeated New Zealand 25 points to 24. Try scorers included Bill Francis 2, John Bevan, John Mantle and David Willicombe with David Watkins adding five goals. Finally in their last game Wales were too strong for the French and finished their Championship campaign with a 23-2 victory. Australia finished top, with England second and Wales in third above both New Zealand and France.
