Research undertaken by John Birch resulted in him finding the story of Emily Valentine. During her time at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, Emily Valentine played in a rugby match. She played alongside her brothers in 1887. She was the first Lady of rugby.
The women’s game slowly developed over time. In the 1960s the ladies’ game finally began to put down roots in European universities. By 1962, the first recorded UK women’s rugby union team appeared at Edinburgh University. Also, in 1963, female students participated in matches against male students in London. And in France University teams were formed in 1965.
Student Pioneers help spread Women’s Rugby
As the pioneering students left university women’s adult rugby began to evolve. Up to 1966, this trend was confined to charity matches usually between male and female teams. Also, the UK’s Daily Herald newspaper included photographs of girls’ team training in 1965. Also at Tadley in Hampshire in 1966. On the 1st May 1968, the first fully documented and recorded women’s club match took place. This match played in France at Toulouse Fémina Sports in front of “thousands of spectators”. Moreover, the success of the event led to the formation of the first national association for women’s rugby union. This was named The Association Francaise de Rugby Feminin (AFRF) at Toulouse, in 1970.
The shirt is manufactured from 100% chunky pique cotton. The Women’s Rugby Polo Shirt Emily Valentine by Ellis Rugby features detailed embroidery on the Crest and the nape. In addition, this garment includes herringbone detail on the vents and velvet tape on the neck opening.
