Alex Murphy OBE captained St Helens in the 21-2 victory over Wigan in the 1966 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, in front of a crowd of 98,536.
This great team featured home-grown talents, such as Murphy, Peter Harvey, Tommy Bishop, Ray French, Frank Barrow and Billy Benyon – alongside a host of international talent. On the wings were two flying Springboks in Tom van Vollenhoven and Len Killeen and this was mixed with classic Welsh players John Warlow, John Mantle and, although missing for Wembley, Kel Coslett. To add the finishing touches there was Albert Halsall and Bill Sayer – a pair of Wiganers in the front row – along with tough as teak Londoner Cliff Watson.
With every sale a donation is made to the charity Rugby League Cares that helps players transition out of the sport, and supports players past and present who are enduring poor health or hardship.
Alex Murphy had the final words – penning the lines: “Roses are red, violets are blue, Saints 21 Wigan 2.”
