The Spirit of Rugby
THE ENDURING VALUES OF RUGBY: MORE THAN JUST A GAME
By Kevin Ellis – Founder of Ellis Rugby
In recent years, contact sports such as rugby have been in the headlines for serious reasons, particularly around the subject of brain injuries and their long-term impact. These are crucial conversations that cannot and should not be ignored. Player welfare must always remain at the heart of the sport’s evolution.
But while it’s right to acknowledge the risks, it’s equally important to recognise the tremendous positives that rugby — and team sports more broadly — bring to individuals and communities. For so many of us, rugby has offered far more than a competitive outlet; it has been a foundation for lifelong health, friendships, and personal growth.
Building a Healthy Lifestyle
Rugby encourages a level of physical activity and discipline that often carries through life. Training, playing, and simply being part of a team fosters habits that help maintain both physical and mental health. A structured training environment builds resilience, commitment, and a sense of purpose that extends far beyond the field.
Social Skills and Camaraderie
One of the most powerful aspects of rugby is the camaraderie it creates. Players learn to work together, communicate effectively, and respect one another — values that prove invaluable in every walk of life. That bond is forged in the changing rooms, on the training paddock, and out on the pitch — and it often lasts a lifetime.
A Brotherhood That Endures
I experienced that power of connection first-hand during a recent trip to Australia. After 37 years, I reconnected with an old friend and teammate, Scott Greenland, who I played alongside in the UK during our playing days. Scott, a tough, no-nonsense prop forward, made 44 NRL appearances between 1982 and 1986 for the Illawarra Steelers.
We met up in Shellharbour, near Wollongong, sharing a few beers and a classic Aussie barbecue while reminiscing about our time on the field together. Despite the years that had passed, the connection remained as strong as ever — proof that rugby friendships truly stand the test of time.
Supporting Mental Wellbeing
The friendships and sense of belonging fostered through rugby can also play a vital role in supporting mental health. Team environments help people stay connected, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. The shared experiences, the highs and lows, and the unspoken understanding between teammates often create a support network that lasts long after the boots are hung up.
Balancing Progress and Values
The modern game must continue to evolve — investing in player safety, improving protocols, and reducing risk where possible. But in doing so, we should also protect and celebrate the essence of rugby: its values of respect, teamwork, discipline, and friendship.
For me, rugby will always be about more than a scoreboard. It’s about people, connections, and the lessons that shape who we are both on and off the field.
