Ellis Rugby launched the Vintage Great Britain Rugby League Collection at Huddersfield Universities Heritage Quay last week. This Lions collection is inspired by the jersey worn between 1985 and 1989.

Two legends from this era were present at the launch Andy Gregory and Henderson Gill. Gregory wore the Great Britain badge at the launch, almost 30 years after his finest hour in the Test arena in 1988 and he was once again in the thick of the action as the Lions and Ellis Rugby unveiled a selection of polos, hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts and jerseys.

It was back in 1988 in the Third Ashes Test at the Sydney Football Stadium that both Gregory and Gill help stun the Aussie crowd with a 26-12 victory. Gill scored two tries, the second of which prompted a famous celebratory dance described by the Aussie commentator as a ‘bit of a boogie’.

Man of the match Gregory, who set up tries for Martin Offiah, Phil Ford, Gill and Mike Gregory, has fond memories of the match. He said: “To play for your country in Australia against the world champions is something every player wants to do – to beat them in Sydney is something most players can only dream about. It’s an experience I will never forget.”

“We had a great set of lads who, thanks to Coach Malcolm Reilly, were in the right frame of mind for the Third Test. Everybody did their job that day and I just feel proud to have played my part in it.”

The Lions Association will receive a commission from the sale of each of the new range, which is available to buy online from ellisrugby.com/ from major sports retailers and selected club shops. The proceeds will then be donated to Rugby League Cares to help fund the charity's player welfare programme.

Ellis Rugby MD, Kevin Ellis, a former professional rugby player commented: “I’m really excited by the range and it’s tremendous that we can also contribute to Rugby League Cares through the Lions Association – such a great cause”

Gregory continued “It’s a tremendous move by the Lions Association. Since I finished playing I’ve had my own challenges and RL Cares has helped look after me. There are lots of other players, past and present who benefit from the support of RL Cares and I am delighted to promote this new range.”

Terry O’Connor, Sky TVs Super League commentator and Eorl Crabtree the BBC Rugby League pundit were in attendance and helped model the collection.
