Willie du Plessis was born on September 4, 1955, in Somerset East, Eastern Cape. Rugby was in his blood. His father played for Eastern Province, while his grandfather, Michael Josias du Plessis, represented Western Province in 1923 and 1924. His early years at Gill College saw him shine in rugby and athletics, representing North Eastern Cape at the prestigious Craven Week tournament.
In 1975, du Plessis enrolled at Stellenbosch University, where he pursued a degree in Physical Education. His dedication to the sport led him to debut for Western Province in 1977. Over the next six years, he played 67 matches for the team. Moreover, he became an integral part of the squad, contributing significantly to Western Province’s success.
One of the highlights of his career came in 1982 when Western Province won the Currie Cup. Furthermore, this victory was made even more special as du Plessis played alongside his two brothers, Michael and Carel. Their combined efforts helped solidify Western Province’s dominance in South African rugby during that era.
Willie du Plessis made his Springbok test debut on April 26, 1980, against the South American Jaguars. Additionally, he achieved a significant milestone by becoming the 500th player to don the Springbok jersey. Throughout his international career, he earned 14 test caps, scoring three tries.
In addition to his test matches, du Plessis played six tour matches for the Springboks, adding four more tries to his tally. Subsequently, his consistent performances further established his reputation as a formidable player. Consequently, he became a well-respected figure in South African rugby.
At just 26 years old, du Plessis retired from professional rugby at the end of the 1982 season to pursue farming. Therefore, despite a short career, his impact on Western Province and South African rugby remains undeniable.
