Billy Boston, born on August 6, 1934, in Cardiff, Wales, is a rugby league legend. Before his illustrious career with Wigan, Boston started in rugby union. He played for the Cardiff Internationals Athletic Club (CIACs) and represented Cardiff Schoolboys. Despite his talent, he faced barriers at prominent Welsh clubs like Cardiff RFC. This exclusion due to racial bias led Boston to switch codes, joining Wigan Rugby League in 1953.
Boston’s decision to join Wigan Rugby League marked the beginning of a historic career. Over 15 years, he played 488 games, scoring a record 478 tries for the club. Boston’s partnership with Eric Ashton at Wigan is legendary. Together, they led Wigan to numerous victories, including the 1959-60 Northern Rugby Football League season Championship final.
